PTs are human movement experts. The human body is evolved to carry out a vast catalogue of movements. PTs address everything that goes into adapting your body to meet the demands of exercise and performance. Whether you are a professional competitor, a weekend warrior, or just interested in healthy aging, we’re all athletes in our own right, and a PT will treat you like one.
The short answer is no. We hear this way too often from our patients. It’s a shame when patients are told to stop the activity that they love. This answer usually comes from a lack of familiarity with the sport and a lack of education of the research related to climbing injuries. Dr. Matt spends his time reading this research and has never had to tell a patient that they couldn’t climb. Connect with him to find out.
No! This is one of the most exciting parts of my job when I tell people that they don’t need surgery. Every injury is unique so always take this with a grain of salt, but for most climbing-related pulley injuries, surgery is not required. However if a pulley is ruptured, a very strict rehab protocol IS required for optimal recovery. Book a session to figure out what this looks like, and set yourself up for success.
I respectfully decline to accept insurance. Having worked under the insurance-reimbursement model for years, it tends to limit the autonomy of the therapist and detracts from the 1-on-1 care you receive. By choosing to go to a cash-pay model, I have the 100% flexibility to treat patients how I see fit, and following the most current research. For very acute injuries (except Pulley Injuries), I may have you work with your regular PT using your insurance, and then we can work together for your climbing-specific needs.
